Shinohara Kanji
Played by Johnny's Jr. Member Murakami Shinji

Kanji is the perfectly stereotypical kid from Osaka. He's energetic, happy-go-lucky, and friendly (sometimes overly so). He has a hot temper, is extremely direct, and often says things that get him in trouble. But underneath it all, he's a sweet guy, even going so far as to burn himself in order to keep Yoshikuni's girlfriend from getting caught by the dorm mother. He also speaks in the most incomprehendible Kansai-ben (Osakan dialect) I've ever heard in my life. The idea that anyone could understand him was probably the biggest stretch in the entire series. Murakami-kun gave a very believable performance, although I must say, they could have probably toned down his accent a bit. Ala.

*-*-*-*SPOILERS BELOW*-*-*-*

Kanji's parents are both hot-headed Osakan work-a-holics who recently divorced. During their marriage, neither parent was ever home for dinner or bed time as long as Kanji can remember, to the point where he gets truly touched when his dormmates do something as simple as reheat his dinner for him. According to Kanji, it was the first time in his life anyone had done that for him. After the divorce, however, the two parents began fighting over custody of Kanji, insisting that he choose between the two parents. Kanji's parents eventually realize, with help from the other boys at the dorm, how much they're hurting Kanji by making him choose. Kanji eventually decides to live with his mother and give both parents a second chance.
