ABOUT YAMI NO MATSUEI
TECHNICAL BASICS
Yami no Matsuei (Descendents of Darkness) is a manga by Matsushita Youko-sensei. This is her first major work. It runs in Hana to Yume (home of Angel Sanctuary, Akachan to Boku, Please Save my Earth, Koko wa Greenwood, and many many others). To date, there are 10 volumes of manga, a character book, a sketchbook, a 13 episode long anime, two drama cds, and loads of miscellaneous merchandising.
MAIN CHARACTERS
TSUZUKI ASATO
Yamimatsu's main character. Tsuzuki's a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky type of guy who loves food and having a good time. He acts goofy and clutzy, but he can be very dangerous when it comes time to get the job done. His power comes from summoning spirits known as "Shikigami" (Summoned Gods).
KUROSAKI HISOKA
Tsuzuki's new partner, Hisoka died at the age of 16 and as you might expect, isn't too happy about being 16 for the rest of eternity. He's very serious and stand-offish, and tends to be put off by Tsuzuki constantly goofing off. His power is empathy, which he had even while alive.
TATSUMI SEIICHIROU
The Secretary of the Shoukanka (but in Japan, secretaries refer to the right-hand man, as in ‘Secretary of the State'). Tatsumi's extremely stingy and rather cold, but under all of that holds a secret soft spot for his favorite Shinigami. His power is revealed in Volume 7.
WATARI YUTAKA
The super energetic doctor/mad scientist of the group. He's good friends with Tsuzuki and acts rather silly, but can get serious when the time calls for it. He speaks with Kansaiben (a dialect of Kansai, western region of Japan which is rather strong...). 003 is his pet owl who always follows him around. His power is revealed in Volume 5.
MURAKI KAZUTAKA
The greatest enemy of the Shoukanka boys. Muraki is technically a doctor, but his main interest is never in healing his patients. He's evil as evil come and always stirs up trouble for the boys. When not killing people, he spends his time trying to get Tsuzuki to marry him.
KONOE
The Chief of the Shoukanka. Your average little old man. He's the leader, but tends not to act that way, leading to rumors that someone else, Tatsumi perhaps, leads the Shoukanka instead of him.
GUSHOUSHIN
Actually twin brothers, distinguishable by the fact that they wear different colored hats, which means they look exactly the same in b/w manga. They basically look like little chickens or something. Their job is to run the files and the library, but they show up on occasion as needed for a job.
THE COUNT
One of the wilder characters in the series, The Count is an invisible(?) man who consists of a phantom of the opera mask, and a pair of gloves. He's master of the Rosque Mansion in the underworld and is keeper of the candles of human lives. He often visits with the Shoukanka boys, mainly because he's busy madly lusting after poor Tsuzuki.
WATSON
The Count's assistant. A little tiny guy who pretty much looks like he's melting. Not a pleasant sight, but he's a super polite and kind helper. Always speaks in scrawled notes instead of printed word bubbles.
MAIN PLOT
My translations start in volume 4, for no better reason than that's where I started reading Yami no Matsuei, and I still think it's a pretty fun place to start from. But here is a sampling of stuff that's happened before: The Shoukanka is basically translated as the "Summons Department" of hell. They work right for the big cheese himself, Enma-oh, King Enma, Lucifer, Hades, all of that good stuff. The employees are called "Shinigami" (Gods of Death, Grim Reapers), and their basic task is to handle any jobs needed to do with judgement/collection of souls. The Chief of the Shoukanka is Konoe, with his right-hand man Tatsumi. Tsuzuki and his new partner Hisoka are in charge of the 2nd Area (all of Kyuushuu, the southern-most main Japanese island), while Watari is in charge of the 6th Area, the Kansai region. Tsuzuki and Hisoka have already run into the evil doctor Muraki on more than one occasion. It was revealed that Hisoka died because of an illness brought on by Muraki. Y'see, Hisoka accidentally witnessed one of Muraki's murders when he was 13. Muraki did, um, some very very not nice things to Hisoka, and then proceeded to curse Hisoka with his mark. Three years later, Muraki finally used the curse to kill Hisoka. Even now, Hisoka can feel Muraki through the curse. In less unpleasant happenings, the Gushoushin are not exactly Tsuzuki's best friends. That's because he's destroyed their library not once, but twice. [sweatdrop] silly silly tsuzuki...
